What NOT To Do As A Protégé: Tips From TikTok

Before I share my TikTok tips for what NOT to do as a protégé, I want to say that most of us have the right instincts when it comes to building a successful and healthy mentor-mentee relationship. However, it’s always nice to have a little refresh on how to ensure a mutually beneficial mentorship.

I think one of the biggest things that we need to be wary of as proteges is taking up too much of our mentor’s time. It’s a tough balance – keeping your mentor up to date with what’s going on in your career and life, while also making sure you’re not an “energy vampire.” Every mentor will be able to offer a different level of commitment. That’s why it’s up to you as the protégé to have an open and honest conversation with your mentor, early on in the relationship, to make sure that you understand how much time, effort and energy they’re able to give.

Let’s also chat about how to appreciate your mentor. While you might be incredibly grateful for the advice and connections that your mentor has given you, it’s important to express this! Most mentors are not in pursuit of credit or small tokens of appreciation. However, knowing that their efforts are making a positive impact on you will reenergize them.

You can show appreciation in many different ways. I think the most effective way is just a simple note! An email, a handwritten letter or even a LinkedIn endorsement can all go a long way reinforcing to your mentor that they are in fact making a difference.
